We went to PSP for a few days between Christmas and New Years. The days were very warm and the nights rather chilly. One tip, if you are golfers, be sure to call before you head to the course. My husband and boys had a 12:00 tee time. When they got there they were told that everything was delayed because there had been a frost on the course the night before. Apparently that is not uncommon in the desert in the winter.
If you are not golfing, but just going for a little R & R in the warm sunshine, you don't really even need a car. We got a great deal ($70.00 on Priceline) on a nice Renaissance Hotel 5, minutes from the airport. It had a movie theater across the street and was within walking distance to all of the shopping and restaurants. Mike Summers - December 2012:
Frontier's air schedule is seasonal. So, double-check dates before making plans to visit Palm Springs. One last thing, since Palm Springs is only an hour and a half from Orange County and two and a half hours from San Diego, you can use this airport as a back-up to visiting those beaches.

My wife and I spent a nice weekend in the Palm Springs area. The airport is a little unique in that the concourse is open-air (Airport Websites: http://www.palmspringsca.gov/index.aspx?page=270 and http://www.ifly.com/palm-springs-international-airport and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Springs_International_Airport ). The airport is about three miles east of downtown. The airport has all of the usual car rental agencies. We rented with Thrifty. You can also use public transportation that has a bus stop just outside baggage claim. It's called the Sunline Transit System (Website: http://www.sunline.org/ ). It costs $1.00 per person per ride with an additional $.25 for a transfer that you need to ask and pay for as you get on the bus. The 24 bus picks up and drops off at the airport (Transit Map: http://www.palmsprings.com/bus.html ) and takes you west to the Palm Springs downtown area. We enjoyed breakfast at Cheekys (Website: http://www.cheekysps.com/ ), where we had Eggs Benedict. This place had great reviews, which is what took us there (Cheekys Reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32847-d1105261-Reviews-Cheeky_s-Palm_Springs_California.html ). There are numerous hotels in town and near the airport. We selected one on Hotwire for $67.00 that included parking, internet, and breakfast. There are many golf courses in the area that you can enjoy. We decided to do some hiking. Here's a website for trails in the area (Website: http://hiking-in-ps.com/ ). We decided to try Indian Canyons (Website:
http://www.theindiancanyons.com/ ), which had some amazing hikes and trails. We hiked the Andreas Canyon first, followed by the Murray Canyon trail. Combined, it took us almost three hours. It cost $9.00 each to enter the Park, but it was worth it. We didn't visit any, but there are many museums in Palm Springs. They include the Art Museum (Website: http://www.psmuseum.org/ ), the Air Museum by the Airport (Website: http://www.palmspringsairmuseum.org/ ), the Aqua Caliente Cultural Museum (Website: http://www.accmuseum.org/ ), the Motion Picture Hall of Fame Museum (Website: http://motionpicturehalloffame.com/ ), Ruddy's General Store Museum (Website: http://www.palmsprings.com/points/heritage/ruddy.html ), and the General George Patton Memorial Museum located 40 miles east of Palm Springs on I-10 (Website: http://generalpattonmuseum.com/ ). We enjoyed The Tropicale (Website: http://www.thetropicale.com/ ) and its Happy Hour Menu. We sat outside under one of their heat lamps and enjoyed it. There are many other places including The Hair of the Dog (Website: http://thehairofthedog.net/ ), which serves good, strong drinks. It's a local place, but we enjoyed sitting at the bar. There's outside seating in front and back. We also enjoyed Bernie's Lounge and Supper Club with great dirty martini's, live music, and great food (Website: http://berniespalmsprings.com/index.htm
